History

The current Pakistan time (PKT) was set up at midnight between 30 April and 1 May 1954. Before this, PKT used to be according to British ruled Calcutta local time as Indian standard time (IST) which came into use on 1 January 1906, and was also applied to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) till partition of subcontinent.

Daylight saving time

In 2002, the government cabinet decided that "in order to make maximum use of daylight and to save energy", they would adopt the daylight saving time (DST) system. This required the country to advance the time by one hour on the night between the first Saturday and Sunday of April, and revert to the original position on the first Sunday in October of 2002 at 00:00.[1]

The Government of Pakistan decided to use DST again from 1 June 1 2008 to 31 October 2008[2]. DST was originally meant to end on 31 August 31 2008[3] but the end date was changed by the Government to be 31 October 2008[3]

In 2009, the clocks across the country were advanced by one hour on 15 April 2009. [4]
